This year, Pensacola is celebrating the 450th anniversary of the city’s founding. Approximately 100 Africans, mostly slaves, were brought by Spanish sailors and together they established Pensacola in 1559, which became the first permanent European settlement in the United States. From brick fortresses and historic churches to special exhibits and soul food, visitors can see first-hand the impact African Americans have played in Pensacola’s history.
