They say the best gifts that can be given are those made with love, and with many of us pinching our pennies this holiday season, homemade gifts are the perfect solution. The Pensacola Bay Area offers numerous inexpensive gifts which can be made for your friends and loved ones. Here are our four fantastic picks for homemade Pensacola gifts:
- A seashell candle is a very lovely, yet simple, gift to make. Take a stroll on Pensacola Beach and choose the perfect shell. Try to find one that is bigger in size so there is more room for wax. Once you have picked your seashell, melt a candle until the wax is completely liquefied, then pour it inside the shell, and place a wick inside. Allow the wax to cool for 30-45 minutes or until firm.
- Add some fun to your family's and friends' trees by creating a beach ornament. Just fill a clear plastic ornament with sand and shells, and they'll always have a little piece of the beach on Christmas. Make sure you leave the sand and shells in the sun to dry to prevent condensation from forming on the inside of the ornament. Once you've filled the ornament to your liking, tie a ribbon or straw rope around the outside for a little extra flair.
- The Gulf Islands National Seashore is known for its gorgeous array of driftwood. There are many different things one can do with driftwood, such as transform it into wind chimes, art projects, a coat rack and even furniture. We suggest taking a simple mirror and using a strong adhesive to stick the pieces of driftwood along the outer edge to form a frame. After it’s created, you will have an original piece and great conversation starter.
- Nothing says Christmas quite like a holiday wreath. Be the envy of your neighbors by creating your own beach-themed wreath. Buy a small foam wreath at the local craft store to begin your project, then head to Johnson Beach to find shells, starfish, sand dollars, moss and other items signature to the beach. Once you have your collection, glue them to the front of the wreath. Be creative and have fun with it!
If arts-and-crafts isn't your favorite hobby, stop by any of downtown Pensacola's many locally owned shops to pick up handmade art, clothes, jewelry and much more this holiday season.
