Ring in the New Year with the Downtown Pensacola Pelican Drop

new years eve in pensacola 2011 - pelican drop

I don't know about you, but after 24 years of underwhelming New Year's Eve celebrations, I've sealed my fate as the world's worst procrastinator for planning an exciting and memorable New Year's Eve.

It's easy to get lost in the rigmarole of the holiday season, and from being knee-deep in turkey during Thanksgiving to frantic holiday shopping, New Year's Eve has always steadily creeped up on me until the day it arrives. Not surprisingly, this procrastination results in a lack of cool plans for New Year's Eve - unless you think watching the Time's Square Ball drop on TV with your parents is cool. This year, however, I've decided to make a momentous change. This year, I'm going to the downtown Pensacola Pelican Drop!

The Pelican Drop draws more than 50,000 visitors and Pensacolians downtown to ring in the new year with friends and family by watching an enormous, illuminated pelican swoop down from the sky at midnight amidst a colorful fireworks display. Hit singer Andy Grammer will be headlining the event on the main stage, and will be accompanied by a diverse lineup of musicians such as Musical Fantasy, Alvarado Road Show and Bad Habits, who will perform on the CatCountry 98.7 and Go Pensacola stages. While the event begins on Dec. 31 at 5 p.m. and lasts through midnight, I am encouraging my friends from out of town to come to Pensacola early, make a weekend of it and experience everything Downtown Pensacola has to offer.

With all of the different things to do in Pensacola over the weekend and at the Pelican Drop, I'm excited to start the festivities and finally have the perfect, memorable New Year's Eve.
